EXPOSURES TRANS FILM FESTIVAL

Celebrating trans stories, amplifying trans voices

As Canada’s only trans film festival, the first of its kind to ever take place in Montréal, Exposures is redefining what film festivals can be and do in Canada.

Instead of grouping films by identity, we focus on the issues, aesthetics, and experiences that matter to trans communities globally. From ecology and discrimination to cowboys and comedy, our films show the breadth and depth of trans storytelling.

Our goal is to capture the diversity and complexity of trans storytelling, celebrating what trans does, rather than trying to define what trans is.

Exposures is for everyone—trans and cis, young and old, film buffs and casual viewers alike. Whether you’re coming to laugh, cry, or reflect, we invite you to join us every September for four days of bold, transformative cinema.

Rethinking Representation, Redefining Cinema

At Exposures, we approach trans cinema with curiosity and care, rejecting one-size-fits-all definitions. Instead, we curate films that highlight the diversity, complexity, and creativity of trans storytelling.

Our programming doesn’t categorize films by identity; it centers the stories, aesthetics, and issues that resonate within and beyond trans communities. From experimental works to family-friendly animations, our selections invite audiences to think critically, feel deeply, and see the world in new ways.

By prioritizing trans creators and their unique perspectives, we aim to create a space where trans stories are celebrated on their own terms—bold, unfiltered, and unapologetically diverse.

Our first edition was a huge success

13 programs across 4 days

84 films screened, from all over the world

An average of 80 attendees per screening

What to Expect This Year

For 2025, we’re expanding upon what made our first edition so special while adding some important new features:

Expect a curated selection of groundbreaking films by trans, Two-Spirit, and gender-diverse creators from across the globe. From powerful documentaries to experimental shorts, our lineup promises to challenge, inspire, and entertain.

  • Fully Accessible Venue
  • Close-captioning across all films
  • A sanctuary space to retreat to during triggering films

Hands-on sessions for aspiring filmmakers, focusing on topics like funding, pitching, and navigating the industry as trans creators.

Opportunities for filmmakers, creatives, and audiences to connect, collaborate, and build lasting relationships.

A selection of animated films and shorts suitable for all ages, creating an inclusive space for trans folks and allies of all ages.

This year, we promise at least one good dance party (and some line dancing, finally!)

EXPOSURES exists on the territories of the Kanien’kehá:ka Nation, who are the custodians of the land and waters of Tio’tia:ke (Montreal). Alongside this necessary but inadequate territorial recognition, we demand restitution and reparation for Indigenous peoples across all of “Canada”.
